Description
The Sentencing Game highlights the importance of accurate communication between individuals with different sets of values and priorities. Sentencing-Game

How it works
In a fictitious country, a number of crimes have been committed. One of the players is appointed Lord Chief Justice, with the rest of the team acting as Local Magistrates. The Lord Chief Justice develops and communicates a comprehensive sentencing policy which the other players must subsequently apply to the criminal offences they are each presented with. The game highlights the success or otherwise of the communicative process by comparing the sentencing decisions of all players.

What participants will be doing
Formulating their attitudes to a number of mini cases involving a ‘crime’. Listening, to understand, the values of the group member appointed as the Lord Chief Justice and testing this understanding by applying the value system suggested by the group member to a new set of cases.

For what levels is it appropriate?
All those wishing to improve their communicative skills by considering the impact of an individual’s values on their behaviour.

Duration
Between 45 and 90 minutes, depending on the wider aims of the exercise, and the discussion time.
